Game  4

Rangers 11, Marlins 4

The Dayton Rangers tallied 7 runs in the first inning to roll to an 11-4 win over the Miami River Marlins on Sunday, May 17 at Kettering Fields.

Brennen Glass and Steve Marshall had RBI singles in the bottom of the first. With an additional three hits, two walks, and three wild pitches, the Rangers would bat around to plate 7 runs.

Shawn Schmitt made his first start of the season and looked sharp for five innings, blanking the Marlins on just one hit. Schmitt struck out five in a row at one point and settled for nine K’s over 7 innings of work.

The Rangers struggled against Marlins’ reliever Randy Davis until the batting order turned over for a second time against the rookie right-hander. In the bottom of the fifth, Glass singled with one out and scored on Robert Riley’s double to left-center. Brandon Riley followed suit with an RBI twin-bagger to increase the Rangers’ lead to 9-0.

The Marlins finally got to Schmitt in the sixth, scoring twice. But the Rangers got those runs back in the 6th and 7th on a Phil Dickerson run-scoring single and Robert Riley home run.

Joe Staten relieved Schmitt to toss the final two innings, allowing a pair of runs, striking out three.

Offensive highlights: Phil Dickerson 2-4 RBI; Brennen Glass 2-4 2R RBI; Robert Riley 2-3 double, HR, 2RBI; Brandon Riley 3-4 double RBI; Steve Marshall 2-4 RBI SB.

Historical Notes: Brandon Riley extended his career-best hit streak to 24 games, one away from tying Jonmarc Lippincott’s record of 25 straight.
