Wild Boars 9,
The Rangers had their first weeknight contest of 2019 and it would be a hotly contested battle with the up-and-coming Wild Boars. In a game that saw the Rangers tie the game on 4 different occasions, the final outcome was not what we expected.
Joe Becker got the start and stayed away from the big inning, but the crucial leadoff batter of each of his 4 innings reached base and scored. In the bottom of the first inning, Rangers third baseman Rob Pederson launched his first career home run to tie the game at one a piece. Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the third, Kyle Moyer led off with a double on the first pitch he saw in a Rangers uniform. Following a single from Mason Koster, Pederson would single to load the bases with one out. Ben Schooler drove home Moyer with a hit, and Brandon Marshall plated two more with a two-out single to tie the game.
The Boars leadoff man would reach base on an error to start the fourth. After another error and a couple wild pitches, they regained the lead. But the Rangers answered in the bottom of the fourth as Chris Jones doubled and later scored on a throwing error.
The Boars leadoff man in the fifth was hit by a pitch and later scored after a hit, wild pitch and an error. But the Rangers rebounded again as Schooler smacked a home run to right center after begrudgingly taking a called first strike on what he thought was ball four.
The Boars would keep chipping away with a pair of runs in the sixth and one in the 7th, but the best the Rangers could do at that point was get one more tally in the bottom of the 7th to fall just short.
Schooler, who pitched the final 4 frames, suffered the hard luck loss, allowing 5 runs (2 earned) and struck out 10.
Offensive highlights: Rob Pederson 2-for-4, 2 runs, HR; Ben Schooler 2-for-3, HR 2RBI; Brandon Marshall 2-for-3 2RBI; Mason Koster 1-for-2 2SB.
