GameS  13,14

Game 1: Rangers 8, Wild Boars 1

Game 2:
Wild Boars 9,

Rangers 5

The Rangers hooked up with the Wild Boars in back-to-back weekends, this time in a doubleheader at Carlisle high school.

After knocking off the Boars in the previous weekend, the Rangers gave the ball back to Shawn Schmitt to see if he could continue to baffle the Boars' bats.  And that's just what the doctor ordered. Despite an unearned first-inning run, Schmitt and the Rangers' defense hung zeroes the rest of the way to win 8-1 in the first game.

The Rangers' offense took awhile to figure out Boars' pitcher Joey Wilson, making his MVABL debut. The hard-throwing righty allowed a couple of Lippincott singles and a double from Brandon Marshall, but K'd seven through 5 scoreless innings as the Boars clung to 1-0 lead.

But just as the Rangers put up a 7-spot in the sixth inning in the last 2 games, the team almost did the same in this game, batting around and plating 5 runs to take a 5-1 lead. Brandon Riley had an RBI single and Ben Schooler followed with a 2-run double. Cody Oakes added an RBI fielder's choice, and a final run was tallied on a misplayed pop fly.

A bases-loaded walk for Marshall and a 2-run single from Oakes rounded out the scoring in the final inning.

Schmitt moved to 2-0 with the complete-game 4-hitter.

Ryan Meinert got the call to start game 2, but had an uncharacteristic outing, as the Wild Boars seemed to have an answer for every pitch. The first inning started out with a couple of singles and a hit-by-pitch, but after a couple of flyouts, the Boars' hit parade ensued. Seven straight hits later and the Rangers found themselves in a dire 9-run hole out of the gate.

With an uphill battle, the Rangers looked to chip away one inning at a time. Ben Schooler continued his hot hitting with a double and scored on a couple wild pitches later.  Brody Dunlevy had an RBI double in the second. Ryan Kemp doubled in the third and scored on a double-play ball. Kemp's 2-run triple crept the Rangers within four runs in the fifth.

As the Rangers were inching away the deficit, the bullpen was handcuffing the Boars' bats. Ben Schooler made his first pitching appearance since 2014. Despite 4 walks in two innings, Schooler struck out 2 and induced a double-play to hold the Boars scoreless. Kemp took over in the fourth and allowed just 1 hit while striking out 10 in the final four frames.

The Rangers were held hitless over the last two innings and lost 9-5.

Offensive highlights: 3-for-5, 4 runs, 2RBI, 2 doubles; Ryan Kemp 2-for-3, 2RBI, double, triple; Cody Oakes 1-for-4 3RBI.

Historical Notes: Shawn Schmitt needs 7.67 innings pitched to reach 900 career innings pitched. Jonmarc Lippincott is 3 games away from 600 career games played.
