Games   13, 14

The 2021 Backyard Battle regular season series wrapped up on Sunday with the Redlegs pulling off a DH sweep of the Rangers at Middletown Madison. Two come-from-behind attempts couldn't get pulled off as late inning insurance runs from the Redlegs was too much to overcome.

The Redlegs played small-ball early on in game one as Jacob Robinson led off the bottom of the first with a walk off Rangers starter Noah Schleinitz. After a sac bunt and a passed ball, Robinson scored on Mike Hartman's base hit to give the Redlegs a 1-0 lead. Noah was bit by the BB bug in the third as the Redlegs strung together 3 walks and scored twice on Kyle Arend's single. The Redlegs added on in the bottom of the 5th off reliever Ryan Qvick as Robinson grounded out to score Eric Jameson, putting the Rangers in a 4-0 hole.

The Rangers finally found some life off Redlegs ace Aaron Carmack in the top of the 6th. Jonmarc Lippincott singled to start the inning, and Nick Gilmore followed suit. Rob Pederson then launched a 3-run home run to right field to make it a one-run ballgame. After walking Ben Schooler, Carmack was relieved by Jesse Jones who promptly recorded a double play and a strikeout to end the threat.

The Redlegs countered with 4 runs of their own in the top of the 7th, which was enough cushion for Jones who blanked the Rangers in the bottom of the 7th.

In game 2, the Rangers struck first in the bottom of the 2nd as Kyle Moyer singled, and after an errant pickoff play, trotted around to third. A dropped third strike on the subsequent batter allowed Moyer to score with the first run of the game. Meanwhile, Joe Becker was easing through the Redlegs lineup, not allowing a hit for the first three innings. But in the fourth, Cody Saraco-Polner broke up any no-no bid with a bunt single. After a single by Robinson, Brad Malott reached on a sac bunt, but Saraco-Polner was forced out at third. But the damage was done as Arend singled to right to score Robinson, and Malott scored on an overthrow at third base.

The Rangers' deficit remained at 2-1 heading into the 7th inning. Brandon Howard's RBI single and Joey Watson's 2-run double off reliever Brandon Saylor gave the Redlegs crucial insurance runs because of what transpired in the bottom of the 7th.

In what looked to be a repeat performance of the comeback victory over the Scouts last week, Mike Seebock started things off with a single to left. With one out, MVPederson stepped up and drilled a 2-run HR, his second longball of the day and 6th of the season, to make it a 5-3 contest. Ben Schooler kept things going with a double to right field, and Moyer followed with a single. After Jesse Jones struck out Markus Neff, Cal Walters singled to load the bases. Up stepped coach Lippincott looking to put the game in his hands, but instead took a fastball to the gut. The painful RBI HBP put the team down just a run. However, the Rangers' luck ran out as Jones was able to induce a groundout to end the game.
